The NYPR Archive Collections | Jan 1, 2000

Paulette Attie begins by reprising Johnny Mercer's CV. Mercer talks about his acting prior to New York. When he couldn't get acting work he turned to writing lyrics for songs. He talks about the difference between writing for the stage and writing for the movies. Writing for the stage requires you more to tailor your work to the singer and the character. "I think that to be a well-rounded song writer, you have to be able to write every kind of song." Work with Harold Arlen. His song Lazy Bones and how he came to write it with Hoagy Carmichael.
