A Cabaret Moment - Alberta Hunter

The NYPR Archive Collections | Jan 1, 2000

Alberta Hunter (1895-1984) was an American singer and songwriter who recorded with artists such as Louis Armstrong and acted alongside Paul Robeson. Her mother's death prompted her to switch careers and she became a nurse for 20 years at the Goldwater Memorial Hospital in New York City. Donald F. Smith profiles Hunter's early career and her triumphant return to performing after her retirement as a nurse.
