Civil defense in review

The NYPR Archive Collections | Jan 1, 2000

This episode is from the WNYC archives. It may contain language which is no longer politically or socially appropriate.

Speech opens with the Grover Whalen noting the importance of dentists - as sometimes this is the only way to determine the identity of a body.

He moves on to discuss the avoidance of deaths during the New York World's Fair thanks to Dr. John G. Grimley, who acted as the Health Officer and ensured proper sanitation. The description of Grimley leads to an introduction of Dr. [Theodore?] Rosenthal, who speaks briefly about public health.

Next, Dr. Charles B. Mandelbaum gives an energetic speech about the importance of participation in civil defense. He encourages listeners to be prepared. Preparation, he believes, will prevent war.
