Educating the Narcotic

The NYPR Archive Collections | Jan 1, 2000

How are educational methods fighting drug addiction? To answer this question, J. Jeffrey Roche, Managing Editor of _Better Times_, the weekly newspaper of the Community Council of New York, interviews three narcotic use experts:

Benjamin C Lemon, of the New York State Narcotic Addiction Control Commission;

John Hernandez, Senior Community Narcotic Education Representative of the East Harlem Narcotic Education Center; and

Thomas P. Leonard, Jr., Senior Community Narcotic Education Representative of the Capital Area of Albany, Troy, and Schenectady.

Guests discuss the factors behind the increased use of drugs, including a lack of awareness of the possible effects of use and addiction; and the differences in drug use between the affluent, suburban communities of upstate New York and inner-city communities such as Harlem.
