Frank Kleinholz
The NYPR Archive Collections | Jan 1, 2000
Frank Kleinholz reflects on the year in art at the city's galleries and museums. He talks about the challenges of doing an art show on the radio and of fascism's efforts to stifle art and culture. He explains $15 million spent on art in New York in the past year and argues that America and the American people have something to say and new ways to say it through art. Art can be deeper than what we see in advertising everyday. Kleinholz says the artist must take leadership in educating the people. Art must become a way of life. "Art has too long been the parasitic activity of psychotic personalities." The artist must be the guide and teacher ---not the collector.
