Griswold L. Moeller on Refuse Removal Problems for the Future

The NYPR Archive Collections | Jan 1, 2000

On this WNYC Special Report, Joe Rice speaks with Griswold L. Moeller, Commissioner of Sanitation.

According to Moeller, there is a "refuse disposal crisis" looming as many trash incinerators will be decommissioned in the coming years and there are not enough landfills to accept the 24 thousand Tons of refuse discarded by New Yorkers each day. New incinerators are being built in different boroughs, such as one at the Brooklyn Navy Yard which will sell its steam to Con Edison; however, this will still not be sufficient to address the crisis. Moeller is also contemplating a program to dump refuse at sea, and the two men discuss the ecological effects.

Moeller then discusses a project to remove abandoned cars and complications of snow removal during the past winter.
