The NYPR Archive Collections | Jan 1, 2000

The exact date of this episode is unknown. We've filled in the date above with a placeholder. What we actually have on record is: 1938-uu-uu.

This presentation of the Works Progress Administration and the Federal Music Project features the Los Angeles Colored Chorus singing mainly traditional African Spiritual music:

Joshua Fit The Battle of Jericho
Climbing up the Mountain
You May Bury Me in the East
Sinners, Please Don't Let This Harvest Pass
Nobody Knows the Trouble I See
Where Shall I Be When That First Trumpet Sounds?

The announcer says a few words about improved driving safety due to recently built and repaired roadways commissioned by the Works Progress Administration. "Safety on the highways is a problem of vital interest to every citizen in the United States. Important factors in obtaining highway safety are safe bridges and the elimination of dangerous grade crossings where death always lurks."

Recorded between 1935 and 1938.
