New Ideas in Education

The NYPR Archive Collections | Jan 1, 2000

Richard Pyatt, a WNYC Announcer and Professor of Speech and Drama at Pace College, moderates a discussion on methods of education with:

Neil Postman, Co-author "Teaching as a Subversive Activity"
Harold Levine, President of Mervin and Jesse Levine Advertising, Inc. Member of the Board of Education, Freeport Long Island
Jack Bloomfield, principal of Egbert Junior High, Staten Island
Robert W. McGarry, President of Lever Data Processing Services, Education Division

They discuss their views on the most effective methods for learning as well as student protest and how this reflects on teaching techniques and values currently used in the classroom.

Pyatt: "We have been talking with kind of a loose title of 'New Ideas in Education, ' and I think anyone of our listeners may, from listening to this program, really determine that we need a great deal more discussion, a great deal more introspective work as far as the role of the teacher and as far as the educational system is concerned, generally, and I think the student rebellions are sort of pointing the way, whatever the reason that they are rebelling."
