From the NYPL Public Programs Brochure for Fall/Winter 1988/1989:
Peter Gay, Sterling Professor of History at Yale University, is one of our most distinguished historians of culture and society. The recipient of psychoanalytic training, he is also renowned for his work on the methods of historical research. Himself a refugee from Hitlerism, he has written extensively on the subject of Jews in the Weimar Republic and is particularly celebrated for his work on Sigmund Freud, the "godless Jew," the subject of his recently published Freud: A Life for Our Time. His other works include The Bourgeois Experience: Victoria to Freud; Freud, Jews, and Other Germans; Masters and Victims in Modernist Culture; and the landmark study The Enlightenment: An Interpretation.
