Saul Steinberg / Poser, Mimi; Russell, Jennifer
The NYPR Archive Collections | Jan 1, 2000
Mimi Poser talks with assistant curator Jennifer Russell about the major retrospective on Saul Steinberg's work at the Whitney Museum. Russell says you don't look at Steinberg's work, you read it. Although except for his earliest cartoons, you don't see captions in his work.
Russell also talks about his early life in Romania and the importance of topography to Steinberg, adding that seven is a sexless number while two and five are sexy numbers. Poser calls Steinberg's work 'Chaplinesque' and Russell agrees. Steinberg's use of fingerprints in his work is discussed as incorporating both fun and identity.
