SQ Quad and Headphones
The exact date of this episode is unknown. We've filled in the date above with a placeholder. What we actually have on record is: 1976-06-uu.
Harry Maynard has as his guests Ben Bauer, Vice President and General Manager of the CBS Technology Center, and John Borwick audio editor of Gramophone Magazine. The discussion focus is how to enjoy four channel sound without four speakers.
Note: According to audio engineer Tom Fine, Bauer did not invent SQ Quad, CBS licensed the concept of matrix-encoded multi-channel from patent-holder Peter Scheiber. However, Bauer made improvements in the SQ system that increased perceived directionality and electronics designs by him and other CBS Labs engineers made practical the concepts of group-delay and steering, crosstalk-rejection gates and the practicalities of cutting stereo LPs with most of the information out of phase to one degree or another.
