It was always a good bet that the Brazilian-born jazz singer and composer Luciana Souza would grow up to be a musician. Her father was a musician who worked with two of Brazil’s greatest artists, Joao Gilberto and Antonio Carlos Jobim, and her mother wrote lyrics. Souza herself made her first recording, a commercial, when she was three. She’s been based here in New York since the 90s and has worked with jazz legends like Herbie Hancock, and her rich vocals have inspired classical composers like Osvaldo Golijov. Souza's own albums, over a dozen of them, reflect her wide interests. She and her band have a run of shows at Smoke Jazz Club, from May 20 through May 24.
